Director of the Month: Guillermo del Toro
Director of the Month 🎬: Guillermo del Toro ✨💫
Born in Guadalajara, Mexico during the peak of the Cold War, legendary director and makeup artist Guillermo del Toro found a love for filmmaking at a young age. He began as a makeup supervisor for almost a decade, shadowing legendary figures in Hollywood such as Richard Smith (VFX Gen for The Exorcist).
Throughout his career, del Toro has proven to be a dynamic director with works ranging from Spanish-American dark fantasy films to mainstream comic book live actions and dramas. Most recently, the Mexican director has delved into much more multifaceted works, producing the infamous romance “The Shape of Water”, which swept the 2017 Academy Awards in a landslide victory.
His storytelling skills were also highlighted in the 2021 Mystery “Nightmare Alley”, a film stacked with A-list actors. Finally, arguably one of del Toro’s most bold and upstanding movies, “Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio” brought the unique aesthetic of stop-motion animation to a whole new level with the incorporation of historical nuances, creating a groundbreaking experience for children and adults alike.
Del Toro’s story is both inspiring and admirable, showcasing to a younger generation of aspiring Hispanic filmmakers that the Hollywood Dream isn’t as unachievable as it may seem— even if it means wishing upon a star every once and a while. 💫
