The Flash: Run NOW!
This film was the campiest, most unhinged version of the DCEU I’ve ever seen…and as much as I hate to admit it, I enjoyed every minute of it (kind of). Let’s get into the review:
Tragic CGI: Let it be known that l am in no way a “DC hater”. Nevertheless, that does not restrict me from absolutely DESPISING the VFX on these films. I’ve heard rumors flying around that the poor graphics were intentional and meant to show viewers Barry’s perspective when he’s Flash, but I simply do not buy it. It looked cheap and rushed to the point where I felt like walking out. This aspect of the movie almost ruined my experience… ALMOST.
The Story: The Flash is surprisingly the first adaptation of the speedy hero on the big screen. I walked timidly into the theater just because of how worried I was for the plot, and considering how much fan service appeared in the trailers with Michael Keaton’s Batman and a new Supergirl, rightfully so. But man, was I proven wrong. This film is SELF-AWARE at its core. The premise of having another Barry Allen weaved into the story with remnants of classics such as Back to the Future and Space Odyssey is, quite frankly, genius.
Performances: Ezra Miller, despite their questionable position on the public stage as of now, gave a remarkable performance, there’s no denying it. Their quirky take on the beloved comic hero added to the juvenile, humorous writing present in the movie.
It’s Weird: This film is odd and capitalizes on that. I enjoyed the sheer amount of fan service sprinkled throughout, although it did get distracting by the end sequence (IYKYK). But otherwise, the uniquely intrinsic value of this film is enough for me to give it a positive rating.
If you’re in the mood to laugh at absurdity, watch The Flash (2023), in theaters now. I’m not going to recommend Transformers as an alternative because we’re honest here at The Cinemagazine. ⚡️
