Director of the Month: Greta Gerwig
Radiant actress and filmmaker Greta Gerwig’s journey to fame wasn’t exactly the “Life in the Dreamhouse” you’d initially expect.
The actress-turned-director spent her youth at an all-girls Roman Catholic high school in Sacramento, an image that might ring a bell if you’ve ever seen her boldest film, “Lady Bird” (2017). Throughout her childhood and into adulthood, Gerwig took part in independent productions and eventually short films, sufficing with the money she could spare for the rest of the decade.
Eventually, the filmmaker created a masterfully raunchy drama known as Lady Bird, breaking barriers in the women’s arena of Hollywood and snatching two Academy Award Nominations. Soon later in 2019, Greta was passed the “Little Women” torch and conjured a poetic interpretation of the beloved classic, garnering acclaimed recognition in the field of directing and making her mark amongst other beaming legends.
Now, with “Barbie” (2023) being arguably the most anticipated film of the summer (up against another pretty GROUNDBREAKING film 💥), Greta Gerwig has paved the road toward inclined female representation in the industry, deeply inspiring young people such as myself to persist despite society saying otherwise. 🎀
